Tidbit#4: Barges on the Rhine

We were a few days into the river cruise, relaxing in our stateroom. I slid the French balcony window open, heard the quiet gurgle of water on the hull, watched vineyards roll by. Phil was describing an uneasy mental state he sometimes experiences, a kind of existential anguish, when a long barge passed us, its name in stark black letters like a message from God: Serenitas.

After that, I collected the names of barges on those working rivers: Celestina, Revolution, Constellation, Vacando, Sublime, Stolt Maas, Annabell, Fedelis. Some were empty, some piled high with scrap metal, construction material. None so vital to us as Serenitas.
